In the Staked Plains region near the middle of the Texas Panhandle lies Amarillo, the 15th largest city in the state.  The Amarillo metropolitan area ranks as the 180th largest in the United States with a population of 236,113 strewn across four counties: Armstrong, Carson, Potter, and Randall. The Canadian river is about 40 miles northeast of Amarillo. The river is dammed to form Lake Meredith which is a major source of drinking water in the Texas Panhandle.
