You don’t have to trek as far south in Texas as the Big Bend National Park to be seduced by the Texas desert high plains. The towns of Fort Davis, Marfa and Alpine, Texas in West Texas offer a rich diversity of history, science, mystery and high art. Situated because of the remoteness of the area, the McDonald Observatory is atop Mount Locke and Mount Fowlkes just northwest of Fort Davis. Also in Fort Davis, you will find the restored barracks at the Fort Davis National Historic Site. In Marfa, Texas you will see the Hotel Paisano were Elizabeth Taylor, James Dean and Rock Hudson stayed during the filming of "Giant" in 1955, as well as the Marfa Book Company and of course the famous mystery of the "Marfa Lights". Finishing the triangle in Alpine, Texas, home of Sul Ross State University and its’ Museum of the Big Bend that houses a collection of artifacts of the sprawling Big Bend region collected for more than 70 years. Northeast Texas is geographically centered on two metropolitan areas along Interstate 20. Tyler, which is to the west and Longview / Marshall to the east.
